‘Resilience’, Vlasenice, Czech Rep

In August 2015 I was invited to take part in the second Vlasenice Stone Symposium by good friends Lars Widenfalk and Alena Matejka.  Around 3 weeks was given to create a monumental piece of sculpture in granite.

My concept was about the ability of nature to grow and overcome whatever obstacle is put in its way. Ive always been fascinated how a small tree can grow and flourish in the most unexpected place- often displacing tons of stone…. The abstract natural forms are shown rising up carrying a block of stone, pushing the largest block to the sky. The sculpture is just under 5m in length and currently sits on a hill overlooking the beautiful village of Vlasenice.
